Their attention span last like 75 seconds, unless their really interested. (number based on how long my daughter is focus before she gets bored and focus on something else.)
I have been teaching my daughter since she was born but really did not start getting her into books and alphabets, American Sign Language, etc until she was about 7 months. My daughter was 31 months when she began writing her alphabet, and I have had my share of difficult times of trying to teach her how to hold the pencil, and hold the paper with the other hand so that it does not move, and the list goes on so now I am able to recommend you have the following to make your time teaching your toddler be a nice experience.
- You should make it fun. If you're going to teach the letter "a" please do not sit there and say "a, this is the letter a, what is this?" That kid will be bored out of their mind. Instead maybe sing or let your child listen to a "letter a" song. (check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBAuIzZttP4 my daughter loves all of them but this one is her favorite.)
- You should have patience. Your child will get the answer wrong on purpose, maybe take it slow and try to get them back on track by doing something a little different. (making it fun will help this.)
- You should Reward. If your child completes his matching worksheet, give him/her a sticker and praise. This will encourage them to get there work done they will have something to look forward to.
By doing the things above I was able to capture my daughter doing a job well done!
